What Comics are you reading? [October]

Time for the new thread.

I'm carrying my question forward from the previous thread, hoping somebody might have an answer for me:

I'm still reading War Games. You know, I could really get used to this whole "not waiting a month to find out what happens next" stuff. You know DC's gotta be loving it too, since I'd be the last person to buy a copy of Batgirl, but yet I'm buying it now. I guess if you only wanted one or two Batman comics a month, you'd be kinda screwed though since it's pretty much pointless to read one without reading them all. Oh well, it's been pretty good so far.

Identity Crisis good / Punisher bad

Identity Crisis is blowing my mind. That's some good reading, lemmie tell you. I'm also really enjoying Hawkman and Aquaman. Robin is also very cool.

Mediocre lately has been Superman (Jim Lee's stuff just isn't jumping off the page for me like his Batman run), Flash and JLA. I'm hoping that these will come around again soon.

What's REALLY NOT working for me is Punisher. I'm done - I've given up. Ennis is so damn inconsistent, and this current stuff is lazy as hell. Horribly written stuff.

Anything Morrison touches is gold. Millar is also very talented. Haven't read Wolvie #20, but it sure seems like a killer combo of Millar and Romita Jr. My favorite Romita Jr stuff was his work on Daredevil. His Uncanny X-Men was also very good.

I got my monthly comics shipment from Westfield Comics yesterday and have been working through it. Lots of good stuff but one biggggg disappointment for me lately is Bendis' AVENGERS "Disassembled" arc. I'm a big fan of Bendis usually but this is pretty awful, and getting worse with each issue. I just read #502, which felt more like it was written by Rob Liefeld than Bendis. Chaotic action, pointless, stupid death and to top it all off really bad coloring. Three issues in and this seems totally random and slapped together. The death of
Spoiler:
Hawkeye
was almost incoherent. Of course he'll be back inside of two years anyway, but geez, try to make a better end of it. If the story appears to wrap up the way it's going this whole thing will be a major clusterfuck. I had high hopes but Bendis just doesn't seem to do team books well at all. I'm debating whether or not to even pick up the NEW AVENGERS series after this mess.

Another month, another email from Tales of Wonder: Invincible Vol 3 is now being pushed back (again!) to 11/24.

Stick with JLA, this new arc with the Crime Syndicate of Amerika looks really good. It starts in issue 107.

As for Superman, Azzarello's stuff is almost always much better once it's done. I can guarantee if you go back and read all 12 issues in a row after it's done, you will appreciate it a lot more.

The current Flash story (starting with the last issue) is an Identity Crisis tie-in. I don't normally read Flash, but I picked up the last issue and I really enjoyed it.

This is DC month

War Games(bat titles), JLA (even with Austen) Flash, Birds of Pray, Superman/batman, Identity crisis. teen titans, JSA and even Superman for the pictures since the story is lacking and dragging.

Right now I'm re-reading the old Power Man & Iron Fist comics from the early 80's. I've got to say that the Mary Jo Duffy/Kerry Gammill stuff was pretty good.

I almost bought samuria executioner today. How is that.

I did buy a shonen jump. I wasn't sure I'd like it but for 4.95 what the heck. I really enjoyed it. It wasn't even that hard to read it in the true manga fashion. That is backwords.

I'm currently reading:

-Marvel Masterworks Daredevil volume 1 (Barnes and Noble edition)
-Batman The Dailies: 1943-1944

Just finished JLA: Rock Of Ages for the third time and will pick up JLA: New World Order, The Flash volume 3, and maybe Marvel Knights: Spider-Man volume one when I go to check out the new graphic novels at my shop tonight.

Does anyone know if volumes two and three of the Batman dailies ever came out? In the introduction in volume one, it lists there will be two other volumes but I've never seen them at my shop or at book stores. Heard something about Kitchen Sink Press being out of business but only a small blurb; don't know the full story.

Also, is there any ETA on new releases in the Marvel Age GN line? I LOVE it and would love to see more releases. Specifically for Sentinel and Runaways.

I really like Executioner so far. I didn't know anything about it when I came across it at a second hand bookstore, but snagged it right up when I saw what it was.

Now, granted I've only read the first volume of Lone Wolf & Cub, but compared to that, Executioner seems more sparse with dialogue, but this is okay because the images really seem to be alive, the progression of the physical actions being conveyed very well through the art. I've got one chapter left... and then I get to start jonesing for vol. 2.

I haven't heard about Shonen Jump, is that from the same guys? I'll have to Google that one.

Shonen Jump is a monthly manga magizine, It is aimed at a younger croud but it was still enjoyable. It features a lot of bang for your buck. Some of the monthly titles are:
One Piece
Yu-gi-oh
Dragon Ball Z
Shaman king

and a few others as well... over 350 pages for 4.95

Ah, gotcha. Sounds like a cool package deal for the kids. I'm not above kid stuff, but to be honest, I've seen the DB Z cartoon here and there and it just didn't grab me (I know, the comics are probably better). I have been kind of curious to see what was up with this Yu-gi-oh though.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Go figure...I ask that and then last night at my shop I see (and buy) the second volumes of Sentinel and Runaways. Hope more are on the way.

Has anyone read Priest? It's a manga put out by TokyoPop I believe. Manga's never interested me that much, but I flipped through the first Priest book at Borders and it was pretty cool. Curious as to what those who've read the entire series thought of it.

...and to throw my two cents in on Shonen Jump, it's a good deal if you want alot to read. Most of the stuff is of the Kids WB and Fox Box variety though. I know I mentioned I'm not too into manga, but I picked up an issue of SJ a while ago out of curiousity and it was neat. Recommended if you want something different to read at least.

REBIRTH BABY!!!!!! Green Lantern Rebirth #1 was beyond awsome. Had just about every ring bearer (minus stupid gnort) and was one hell of a way to kick off this six issue series.
